DIY instructions for Making a

Jointer Hook for your GRR-Ripper

I did some planing and face jointing this weekend and found that moving the 8" wide long rough cherry boards over the jointer wasn't always the slickest thing (pun intended) to do using push pads. I found on a number of occasions that either the pad would slip or the combination of the downward pressure on the pad required to make it grab increased the difficulty of pushing the rough boards through. So I made this little add on jig for my GRR-Ripper to hook the end of the board. MicroJig has a hook jig which I have but that puts the hook right at the end of GRR-Ripper and I didn't want that for this application.

So I cut a piece of scrap 1/2" plywood to form the hook and attached it through one of the side holes on the GRR-Ripper.  Attach it on the side of the GRR-Ripper which is against the jointer fence. What you cant see is that on the back side of that hook, I inserted a screw to stop the hook from pivoting all the way down (pic at right) which would interfere with using the GRR-Ripper as a push block until the hook could connect with the end of the board. With this design you can use the GRR-Ripper on a long board as a regular push block and when you get near the end, the hook can be engaged.  So far it has worked pretty well.
