STOP RUST
DIY Desiccant

Hi folks,

I actually got this idea from Ruffturn on WoodNet and many months later decided to take action to help with my rust problem.

The premise is that if I put desiccant in the drawers with my tools, that it will absorb the moisture and keep the tools rust free. It works with the little desiccant packs you find in all sorts of product packages, so a larger package of the stuff in a drawer should work the same.

The definition of desiccant is:

des·ic·cant 1. A substance, such as calcium oxide or silica gel, that has a high affinity for water and is used as a drying agent

So off to find either substance. Luckily silica gel is readily available in the form of high tech cat litter.

Once you've found the cat litter you will need something which allows the silica to breath to contain it. A discarded pair of panty hose is what I used and it works well.

Simply create little pouches with the panty hose (or whatever you decide to use) and fill them up....tying off both ends.

That's it. Now place them in the drawers with tools you are concerned about like drawers containing router bits, planes, nail guns, etc.
