This overflow is designed to work with Reef Devil Skimmers, I dont know if it will work with any other kind. If your skimmer stops foaming when you close off the cup drain, then this overflow should work as advertised which means it will stop the skimmer from foaming once the level on the jar covers the overflow tube and provides air filtration. If not, it will provide some added overflow capacity and least filter the air.

I used a plastic jar that I bought at Walmart full of Parrot food (I have a parrot). The food only costs $5.97 and you can just feed it to the birds. The jar holds about 3 quarts, is rectangular and about 10x5x5. With the air filter it adds another 4" to the height. I think the best way to make the filter would be to have a tube run up the center with the carbon all the way around it, but for now, this simple method seems to work.

I purchased the 1/2" threaded elbow (looks like nylon or opaque pvc) at a True Value Hardware store, and used a plastic conduit nut to hold it in place. You attach the 1/2" drain hose from your collection cup to it. For the overflow tube, I just slipped a piece of 3/4" ID tubing over the threaded end of the elbow fitting. You adjust the length of the overflow tube to allow for the desired amount of liquid overflow before it stops the skimmer from foaming.

I used 5 min epoxy to glue the pill bottle onto the cover, but make sure you sand both pieces do that the epoxy adhears well.

I have some poor quality black and white pics, sorry, old B&W Quickcam but they might help:
